Description
Pils celta 1330. gadā kā Livonijas ordeņa mestra rezidence. Tā bija tipisks cietoksnis, celta pēc t.s. konventa pils plāna ar četriem torņiem un iekšējo pagalmu. 1448.gadā pili nopostīja un vēlākajos gados daudzkārt pārbūvēja, kā rezultātā tā zaudēja savu viduslaiku veidolu. Svina torni uzcēla 16.gs. sākumā, bet 1938. gadā uzcēla trīszvaigžņu torni. 1785-1787. gadam uzcēla jauno korpusu – 3 stāvu ēku guberņas iestāžu vajadzībām, bet 1818. gadā izveidoja Balto zāli. Savukārt 1938. gadā arhitekts E. Laube pielāgojot pili valdības reprezentācijas vajadzībām izveidoja Sarkano zāli. Pils pagalmā virs bijušās galvenās ieejas saglabājušies 16.gs. pirmās puses akmens kaluma ciļņi, kas atveido ordeņa patronesi Sv. Jaunavu Mariju un mestru Valteru fon Pletenbergu. Kaut arī laika gaitā zudis to košais krāsojums, tie ievērojami kā vēlās gotikas un renesanses laikmeta mijas mākslas paraugi. Arī pašlaik pilī atrodas Valsts prezidenta rezidence, bez tam, izvietots Ārzemju mākslas muzejs, Latvijas Valsts Vēstures muzejs un Raiņa Literatūras un mākslas vēstures muzejs.
