Tā kā Veclaicene ģeogrāfiski atradusies uz galvenajiem tirdzniecības ceļiem starp Krieviju un Latviju, izsenis šo vietu apdzīvojuši dažādu tautību cilvēki, to starp gan krievi, gan igauņi. 19. gs. vidū Veclaicenē izveidojās Dievmātes Patvēruma pareizticīgo draudze. Pēterburgas tirgonis M. Fjodorovs 1894. gadā baznīcai dāvināja vienu no sešiem zvaniem – pašu lielāko, kas saglabājies līdz mūsdienām. Visos 20. gs. karos laukakmeņu un ķieģeļu celtā baznīca ir palikusi neskarta, kaut gan tā atradusies tikai kādus 15m no lielā ceļa.
Reizi mēnesī baznīcā notiek dievkalpojumi.
