Pēc Rīgas bīskapijas atjaunošanas 1918.gadā no daļas Līvānu un Vārkavas draudžu tika nodibināta Vanagu draudze. Tā Vanagu kapu kapliča kļuva par draudzes baznīcu. 1933.gadā tika pieņemts lēmums sākt jaunas baznīcas būvi. Jau 1934.gadā Līvānu dekāns Staņislavs Vaikuļs iesvētīja baznīcas pamatus. Pēc diviem gadiem bīskaps Jāzeps Rancāns konsekrēja jauno Vanagu baznīcu. Interesanti, ka jauno baznīcu cēla apkārt vecajai koka baznīcai. Dievnama lielajā altārī ir Dievmātes glezna, kā arī Svētā Jāņa Kristītāja un Svētās Annas gleznas. Visi trīs altāri veidoti pēc Subates baznīcas altāru parauga, jo draudzes prāvests Leons Garška, kas vadīja celtniecības darbus, bija cēlies no Subates draudzes.

Šajos kapos, gan vecajos, gan jaunajos, ir apglabātas Vanagu pagastam nozīmīgas personības - Jānis Staris, priesteris Pēteris Onckuls, piemineklis Antona Juhņeviča piemiņai un arī Nacionālo partizānu piemiņai. Abi kapi ir kā vēstures atspoguļojums, kas ļauj ieskatīties pagasta vēsturē.
