Pareizticīgo draudze Alojā ar Rīgas bīskapa Filareta (Gumiļevska) svētību dibināta 1846. gada 31. augustā laikā, kad no 1845. līdz 1848. gadam 700 Alojas luterāņi pievienojās pareizticībai. Līdz 1917. gadam draudze reģistrēta kā Stakenbergu draudze, jo tā atradās Stakenbergu muižā.1846. gadā Stakenbergu muižai piederošās zemes tika uzcelta koka baznīca, un tai blakus pēc dažiem gadiem – pareizticīgo draudzes skola. Alojas Kristus piedzimšanas pareizticīgo baznīca iesvētīta 1895. gadā. Ēka tika būvēta no laukakmeņiem un sarkanajiem ķieģeļiem bizantiešu stilā. Tās arhitekts ir Jānis Frīdrihs Baumanis. Draudzes dokumenti gājuši bojā ugunsgrēkā 1991. gadā. Draudze tika atjaunota pēc Otrā pasaules kara un kādu laiku darbojās arī padomju laikā. Pēc Latvijas neatkarības atjaunošanas tika nozagtas gandrīz visas baznīcas ikonas. 2007. gadā draudzes darbība tika atjaunota.
