Balgales baznīca senāk saukta par Pēterciema baznīcu. Kad tapusi pirmā, vairs nav zināms. Tagadējā Balgales baznīca celta 1807. gadā par firsta Karla Kristofa Līvena (Carl Christopher von Lieven) līdzekļiem un iesvētīta 1809. gadā. Stilistiski tā attiecināma uz ampīra laiku – vienjoma garenbūve ar sakristeju un kvadrātveida zvanu torni, kam piramidāla jumta smaile, un spriežot pēc lielā mākslas priekšmetu skaita, kas arī vairumā attiecināmi uz ampīra stilistiku, ir šī laika mākslas un būvlietu kolekcijas glabātuve.
Altāris – klasisks kolonnu portiks, tā zelminī – glorija. Altārgleznu «Krustā sistais» (gobelēns; 1995) darinājusi tekstilmāksliniece Aija Baumane. Iekštelpās skatu saista arī rets lietišķās mākslas piemineklis – čuguna altāra margas, melni krāsota 7akanta arabeska ar apzeltītām rozetēm, lietas ap 1810. gadu. Baznīcas torni grezno senu zīmju salikums, Latvijā tas ir vienīgais ar šādu ornamentu – krustu krusts un Saules krusts ar zeltītu centru. Baznīcu aptver masīvs mūra žogs.
