Description
Varakļānu pils celta 1783. – 1789. gadam Romas Svētās impērijas grāfam Mihaelam Janam fon der Borham, pēc Latgalē uzaicinātā itāļu Arhitekta Vinčenco Macotti projekta. Tā ir izcils un agrīns klasicisma stila paraugs Latvijas būvmākslā. Grāfs M.J. Borhs 18.-19. gs. bija nozīmīga persona – Polijas Seima loceklis un ģenerālkvartīrmeistars, kā arī izcils dabaszinātnieks – studējis mineraloģiju, ģeoloģiju, interesējies par literatūru un mākslu. No 1790. gada viņa un laulātās dzīvesbiedres, Baltijas ģenerālgubernatora Georga Brauna meitas Eleonoras, pastāvīgā dzīves vieta kļuva Varakļāni.
