Tepera ezers izveidots aizsprostojot Abula upi. Sākumā ezeru sauca par Kalnezeru, jo lejpusē atradās Vidus ezers. Ezera ūdeņi darbināja ūdens ratu, kas bija savienots ar āmura pacelšanas vārpstu. Lielā āmura dēļ ezeru sāka dēvēt par Ēmuru. Bankrotējot dzelzāmura īpašniekam to pārņēma igaunis Tepfers. Tā ezers nes sava pēdējā dzelzs āmura īpašnieka Tepfera vārdu. Tagad ezeru atpazīst ar vārdu Teperis.Tepera ezers un tā gleznainā apkārtne ir iecienīta smilteniešu un pilsētas viesu atpūtas vieta. Ezera apkārtnē iekārtoti dažāda veida sporta laukumi un peldvietas, kā arī auto un kartingu trase.
