Lai stiprinātu katoļticību, poļi 1687. gadā Livonijas ordeņa priekšpilī uzcēla pirmo katoļu baznīcu. 1738. gadā nodegušās baznīcas vietā kanoniķis Abrickis uzcēla lielāko un skaistāko koka baznīcu tā laika Latvijā. Tā bija majestātiska ēka ar 2 torņiem, 5 altāriem, bagātīgu liturģisko inventāru. 1938. gada 11. jūnijā tā nodega lielajā Ludzas ugunsgrēkā.
Tikai 1995. gadā ticīgajiem durvis vēra atjaunotā baltā baznīca, kuras atjaunošanas darbos pielika roku daudzi ludzānieši. Ir vērts apskatīt dievnama populārā sakrālās mākslas meistara J.Bārdas gleznotās Krusta ceļu gleznas. Vērtīgas ir arī senlaicīgās koka skulptūras, centrālā altārglezna, jauno, talantīgo novadnieku mākslinieku darbi – Andra Misāna sānu altāru gleznas un Andra Prikuļa veidotie altāri.
