Vairāk nekā pirms gadu tūkstoša Mežotne bija seno zemgaļu nocietinājuma vieta, bet Mežotnes muižas vēstures pirmsākumi meklējami hercoga Jēkaba laikā 17.gadsimta vidū. Vēlāk, 1795. gadā, Krievijas ķeizariene Katrīna II Mežotnes muižu nodeva mūža lietošanā savu mazbērnu audzinātājai Šarlotei fon Līvenai, kurai 1799.gadā piešķīra arī grāfienes titulu. 1797.gadā ķeizars Pāvils I muižu nodeva Līveniem dzimtīpašumā. Šarlote fon Līvena tagadējās Mežotnes pils ēkas celtniecību uzsāka 1797. gadā pēc itāļu arhitekta Džakomo Kvarengi projekta. Pils celtniecību vadīja sakšu izcelsmes arhitekts Johans Georgs Ādams Berlics. Celtniecības darbus pabeidza 1802. gadā. 1920. gadā agrārās reformas gaitā firsts Anatols Līvens Mežotnes pils īpašumu zaudēja. No 1921. gada līdz 1944. gadam pilī atradās lauksaimniecības skola. Otrā Pasaules kara cīņu gaitā pils ēkas daļēji sagrāva. No iznīcības pili 1958. gadā glāba Mežotnes selekcijas un izmēģinājumu stacijas gādībā uzsāktie restaurācijas darbi. Pils atjaunošanu pabeidz 2001. gadā.
