Draudze dibināta un pirmā koka baznīca celta 1567. gadā, tā atradusies līdzās patreizējai baznīcai, kas uzcelta 1811.gadā. Sakristejā iemūrēti kapakmeņi – Dignājas pēdējās muižnieces A. Hahnoveras un Zasas muižnieka A. Velinka piemiņas zīmes. Tie datēti ar 1575. un 1599.gadu.
Pirmā Pasaules karā svētnīca tiek izpostīta. Vietējie iedzīvotāji zina nostāstu, ka 1911.gadā vēl bijusi dzīva mazā koka baznīciņa ar salmu jumtu, bet cēluši jau jaunu. Lauzuši tuvumā esošo kaļķakmeni. Lielā grava pie baznīcas radusies baznīcas celšanas laikā. Celtniecības darbu vadījis meistars no Sāmu salas. Viņiem bija arī palīgs – svešzemnieks Kažs Vidnēris. Meistara dēls ieskatījās latviešu meitenē Ilzē, un kādā tumšā rudens naktī jaunieši nozuda, pazudusi bija arī laiva no Daugavas krasta. Kad baznīcas celtne bija pabeigta, meistari posās atceļam uz mājām. Tomēr muižkungs negribēja viņus laist, jo esot pazaudējis vienu dzimtcilvēku – Ilzi. Viņas vietā labprātīgi palika meistara palīgs Kažs Vildnēris. Dignājā viņš daudz ko šejieniešiem iemācīja: gatavot neparastus ēdienus un klāt godu galdus. Kaža Vildnēra dzimta ir kupli sazarojusi, un atvasītes dzīvo vēl šodien, nesdamas šādu pat uzvārdu.
