Subates luterāņu baznīcai, kas celta 1685. gadā un ir Valsts un Eiropas nozīmes kultūrvēsturisks piemineklis, Latvijas mākslas vēsturē piemīt īpaša vieta. Pirmkārt, tās arhitektūra pilnīgi atšķiras no tradicionālā priekšstata par Latvijas lauku baznīcu. Otrkārt, Subates vārds tiek lietots, lai apzinātu kokgriezēju un koktēlnieku grupu, kura 17 .gs. beigās darinājusi iekārtas virknei baznīcu Latvijā un Lietuvā. No skopā ēkas apraksta uzzinām, ka tā ir 14 asis gara, 9 asis 2 pēdas plata un 5 asis 2 pēdas augsta masīva ēka ar šindeļu jumtu, labā tehniskā stāvoklī. 1940. g. baznīcai uzliek skārda jumtu. Nākošais remonts seko tikai pieminekļu valdes darbības laikā – 1935. gadā. Kopš tā brīža nenotiek nekādas būtiskas pārmaiņas līdz pat 1988. gadam, kad pamatīgi tika remontēta pati ēka un pārkrāsota baznīcas iekārta.
Baznīca atrodas kalnā, no kura paveras elpu aizraujošs skats uz Subates pilsētu, ezeru un Lietuvas robežu. Dievnama interjers ir īpašs baroka stila darinājums, ko veidojuši Stelmuižas kokgriezēji. Baznīcā ir brīnišķīga akustika.
