Pils celta baronu fon Volfu dzimtai 1843.g. "Šīs neogotiskās ēkas tapšanas laiks liecina par jaunu mākslas strāvojumu agrīnu izplatību ne tikai metropolē Rīgā, bet arī laukos. Grūti spriest, kāda izskatījās jaunā ēka, kurā iekļāvās arī kāda senāka kungu māja. Līdz mūsdienām no kādreizējās neogotikas pils saglabājies lielais tornis, pagrabi un ēkas centrālā daļa, kuras pagalma pusē pirmajā stāvā kādreiz bijuši četri lieli smailarkas logi, bet blakus tiem labajā pusē - smagnējs tādu pašu arku lievenis. 19. gs. 70.-80. gados pils tika pārbūvēta franču renesances iespaidā ."
1905.g. revolūcijas laikā pils nodedzināta, atjaunota barona Borisa fon Volfa vadībā 1908.gadā un uzskatāma par vienu no spožākajiem sava laika franču neorenesanses stila paraugiem Latvijas muižās. Ēkā labi saglabājusies atjaunotā interjeru apdare, koka kāpnes, neoklasicisma zāles interjeri u.c. "Svētku zāle ir viens no greznākiem neoklasicisma interjeriem Latvijas pilīs: telpas sienas sadala pilastri, durvis rotā portāli, griestu ieloci - vairākas dekora elementu joslas, bet griestu spoguli - profilēta dzega ar akanta lapu vijumiem stūros."
20. gs. 30. gados vairākas vasaras un vienu ziemu pilī pavadīja Džuzepe Tomazi di Lampedūza, itāļu rakstnieks, kurš pasaules slavu guvis ar romānu "Gepards".
