Kajaks ir vienvietīga, salīdzinoši maza izmēra laiva. Airēšana notiek ar divlāpstiņu (kajaka, smailītes) airi. Airētājs sēž sēdeklī, kas atrodas tuvu pie laivas dibena (visu sēdēšanai paredzēto konstrukciju sauc par kabīni). Airētāja kājas ir izstieptas uz priekšu un balstās pret kāju balstu.
