Kanoe laivu vispārējās atšķirības ir:
- kanoe airē ar vienlāpstiņas - kanoe - airi (kaut gan ir iespējams izmantot arī kajaka airi);
- raksturīga ir kanoe airētāja poza - uz viena vai abiem ceļgaliem (tiesa, tūrisma kanoe parasti sēž sēdus).
Kanoe ir lieliski piemērota atpūtas braucieniem pa mierīgām upēm. Tai ir liela celtspēja, praktiski atkrīt mantu novietošanas problēma, jo vietas tajā ir "kā jūra", tai ir diezgan labas gaitas īpašības. Prātīgi airējot, ir labas iespējas saglabāt sausas rokas (un visu pārējo), kas citās laivās praktiski nav iespējams. Sausām rokām tulznas uzberžās daudz mazāk kā slapjām.
